Telehealth

At Therapy Alliance Group, we are committed to facilitating your access to therapy in a way that meets your needs as a family. This might mean taking into account your proximity to our clinics, complex scheduling, family, or support needs, or your preferences not to attend at a clinic regularly, face to face.

Telehealth is when health services are provided by phone or video. At Therapy Alliance Group, we can offer telehealth for assessment and therapy services and for therapy by a speech pathologist, occupational therapist, or physiotherapist.

Therapy through telehealth looks as diverse as face-to-face therapies! Your clinician will work with you to understand your goals, priorities, and interests, and will then develop an individualised and engaging plan for your appointments.

Yes! Telehealth is often combined with other methods of assessment and intervention. For example, you might access therapy through telehealth during the school term and attend in clinic for a face-to-face review during the school holidays. Or the client might attend in-clinic face-to-face appointments with telehealth planned with parents or caregivers in between to offer coaching in strategies that can be implemented in the home and in day-to-day life.

Telehealth is not just for rural and remote clients! Clients who need to manage specific scheduling, routines, or care for other siblings, or who have a preference not to attend in a clinic can all benefit from telehealth! Telehealth can also be wonderful for specific goals, for example parent or caregiver coaching.

Telehealth might not be for you if you have unreliable internet service or the required equipment.

Telehealth might also not be suitable if your needs mean that you require complex and “hands-on” interventions.

Not sure if it’s for you? You can speak with your clinician at any time and they will be able to provide advice.

You will need the following:

  • A reliable internet connection
  • A device with a camera and speakers (which can be connected to the internet)
  • Depending on your specific telehealth plan, you may also need some other resources. Your therapist will advise.

Consider if TeleTAG Flex might be right for you!

TeleTAG Flex

TeleTAG Flex is a service delivery model unique to Therapy Alliance Group! It is flexibly delivered telehealth, where services are provided online but the therapist and client don’t need to be available at the same time. We use “store and forward” systems to send messages between the clinician and client, without the expectation of an immediate response. It might mean that:

  • Clients send copies of files (for example, previous reports or work samples) or videos of therapy completed at home
  • Clients complete online surveys or checklists
  • SMS messages are exchanged between the client and clinician
  • Clinicians send demonstration videos for clients to watch/review
  • Clinicians send home therapy activities

All of our disciplines at Therapy Alliance Group can offer support through TeleTAG Flex! Whether Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Physiotherapy, or multiple services - even Key Worker Model Services - we can offer TeleTAG Flex services.

TeleTAG Flex might suit any client or family who are

  • self-motivated to complete activities and forward information without extra support
  • Have a degree of flexibility in sending information and receiving responses
  • Have goals that can be learned without direct (at the same time) coaching and feedback

Additionally, TeleTAG Flex can particularly benefit working parent families or children with limited attention to complete therapy activities in one sitting.

TeleTAG Flex might not be for you if you have unreliable internet service or don’t have access to the required equipment.  TeleTAG Flex might also not be suitable if your needs mean that you require complex and “hands-on” interventions.

Not sure if it’s for you? You can speak with your clinician at any time and they will be able to provide advice.

You will need the following:

  • A reliable internet connection
  • A device with a camera and speakers
  • The ability to record and upload, and view videos and files

Allied Health Assistant (AHA)

An Allied Health Assistant (AHA) is someone who is trained to provide therapy services by implementing a program that has been written by a qualified allied health professional, like an occupational therapist, physiotherapist, or speech pathologist.  The allied health professional remains responsible for your care and reviews your progress and the AHA’s work at regular intervals to ensure that you are getting the highest quality of therapy, and that we are continuing to work towards your goals. At Therapy Alliance Group, we hire allied health students as AHAs, matching you to therapy services faster, and also helping to develop the future allied health workforce.

AHAs can provide a lot of the same direct therapy services that an occupational therapist, physiotherapist, or speech pathologist can, and they only implement the program that has been provided to them, which is written completely uniquely to you. At Therapy Alliance Group, we train our AHAs in how to address specific goals using specific approaches, but the structure of your appointment session or the specific activities you complete can be flexible, and are as diverse and unique as our clients!

Because AHAs are implementing a program which is pre-written by a qualified allied health professional, they aren’t able to shift the focus of your session to new goals. Changing goals requires a review of your plan by the allied health professional. Additionally, AHAs can’t provide caregiver coaching or training because of the specialist professional knowledge required to do this effectively.

Yes! AHA can provide mobile services, telehealth services, intensive blocks of therapy (for example coming to daily AHA appointments over the school holidays), and possibly also others! AHA can also be a part of a key worker service. Speak to your clinician if you’re wondering about other particular service types being delivered by an AHA.

You can access occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and speech pathology services by AHA. Additionally, because of how we plan and prepare our AHA programs, you can access multiple disciplines through AHA, even having the same AHA deliver all of your therapies! This could mean you see the same AHA multiple times a week for different goals, or it could mean that you see the one AHA and they work on goals for multiple disciplines during each appointment.

There can be multiple benefits of accessing therapy delivered by an AHA. Key among them is delivery of the same high quality intervention you expect, typically at a lower overall cost than appointments with an allied health professional. See for more information: How do AHA service agreements differ to therapy directly with an allied health professional?

Additionally, our AHA’s can often facilitate more frequent appointments than our allied health professionals, including multiple appointments within one week where this is indicated. Further, our AHA’s also often have more flexibility to provide mobile services

Because AHA services are delivered via a pre- prepared, completely individualised and unique program, AHA services do have some differences included in our service agreement. For NDIS purposes, AHA services are considered a “Program of supports”. Some of the key differences in AHA services are:

  • Lower per-hour rate for all work completed by an AHA
  • Cancellation fees apply where cancellations are provided with less than 2 weeks notice
  • All AHA programs include regular AHP time for program preparat

You can continue to see AHA services for as long as it is clinically appropriate to your goals and you wish to continue it! A single program of supports will typically run from 12-24 weeks, although some may be slightly shorter or longer based on individual needs. After this time your overseeing allied health professional will review and update your program, but if AHA is still meeting your needs, can still continue with the service.

Anyone who needs regular intervention or therapy, who has goals which are likely to be stable for at least 12 weeks, with a semi-flexible schedule. Because we employ allied health students as our AHAs, from time to time AHA availability can change based on placements and class timetable changes.

Unsure if this describes you? Speak with your clinician to discuss whether AHA services might be right for you.

AHA might not be a suitable service delivery model if:

  • Your goals change more regularly than roughly 12 - weekly
  • Parent or caregiver training, coaching,  support, or problem solving is a key component of your intervention needs or plan
  • You don’t have any flexibility within your schedule around days or times. Note that you don’t need to have short notice flexibility, you would be advised in advance of any changes to availability.

If this describes you, consider if Student Services might be right for you.

Unsure if this describes you? Speak with your clinician to discuss whether AHA services might be right for you.

Student Services

Student services are assessment and therapy services provided by an allied health student (i.e. someone studying to be a speech pathologist, occupational therapist, or physiotherapist) while they are on a professional placement with us.

Student assessment and therapy looks very similar to services provided by our allied health professionals. The assessment or therapy appointment will still be planned by the therapist providing the service, will still be evidence based, and will still be unique to your goals and support needs.

The main differences between a student led session and a service provided by an allied health professional are:

  • You are more likely to have more than one therapist in the room. At Therapy Alliance Group, we offer “peer placements” which means that students come and complete their placement activities in a pair or group. When students are running services without an allied health professional directly in the room while the service is running, you are likely to have another student in the room with you. Their role is to observe their peer, and provide them with support as needed. Depending on your unique needs and plan, you may even have both students directly involved in running your session!
  • All student work is supervised and cosigned by a qualified allied health professional. This supervision is sometimes provided face to face (with the allied health professional in the room with you), and sometimes it is provided through video review, reflection, and review of notes and therapy planning (the allied health professional isn’t in the room with you when the therapy is delivered). A qualified allied health professional reviews all therapy plans before they’re implemented

Student services can be combined with ALL of our service delivery models. That means that students can provide all services, including telehealth, teleTAGflex, block intensives, face to face therapy etc. The only limitations are where there is a contractual limitation (e.g. some contracted agency services require a minimum number of years experience), and mobile services can only be provided by a student with the allied health professional directly present.

Therapy Alliance Group routinely offers occupational therapy and speech pathology placements across most of our locations. We have also signed a statement of intent to offer placements for a newer physiotherapy program in the future. The availability of student services for any given discipline is dependent upon the university’s acceptance of our placement offers.

There can be multiple benefits of accessing therapy delivered by a student. Key among them is delivery of the same high quality intervention you expect, typically at a lower overall cost than appointments with an allied health professional. See for more information: How does payment for student led services work?

Additionally, our students can often facilitate more frequent appointments than our allied health professionals, including multiple appointments within one week where this is indicated. Further, our students are able to respond to and vary goals within appointments and provide caregiver coaching, training and support.

Finally our student sessions are booked at a standard 1hour appointment, and so you get more therapy time, for the reduced cost.

When you access student services, you only pay for the time the overseeing allied health professional spends in supervision of your particular service.

  • If the allied health professional is present in your session, you will pay allied health professional rates for the full session duration, + for time spent in reviewing student written notes and therapy plans. This will never cost you more than seeing the allied health professional directly
  • If the allied health professional is not present in your session, you pay only for their time spent reviewing the student’s notes and plan for your session. This is a significant saving.

When paying for student services, there are some funding limitations:

  • Medicare rebateable sessions (e.g. CDMP or TCA appointments) can’t be used for student appointments unless the allied health professional is present in the room for your whole service. However, if they aren’t, as you are still paying for only the allied health professional’s time in supervision, there is still a cost saving!
  • NDIS funding can be used to pay for the allied health professional’s time in reviewing notes and therapy plans, as well as for any time the allied health professional spends in your appointments. As we don’t charge any additional fees for student services, this means that your NDIS plan will cover all costs associated with this service provision.

Sometimes clients struggle with changes to their therapist or with having multiple therapists present in a room at any given time. For these clients, student led services may not be the most suitable.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is therapy that is provided to multiple clients at once by one therapist, with the clients interacting with and supporting each other with the therapy tasks. It’s a great opportunity for both the introduction and consolidation of skills, is made up of clients with similar goals and abilities, and can sometimes also include caregivers who attend the session to learn new skills and knowledge that they can use to support the client.

Therapy Alliance Group routinely runs groups during school holidays, and our offerings change from year to year! We frequently run seasonal craft groups and school preparedness groups among others. You can always find information about our upcoming groups on our social media.

Additionally, from time to time Therapy Alliance Group clinicians will identify a group of clients with similar goals and abilities who they feel might benefit from engagement with a bespoke group program. In this instance, your therapist will approach you to discuss potential participation.

Groups can be especially useful for clients who have learned new skills and need to practice using those skills in different situations. Group therapy can also benefit clients who need practice interacting and engaging with peers in supported settings. Additionally, group therapy can be great for caregivers to learn new information, receive training, and connect with other caregivers.

Group services are considered a “Program of Supports”. The primary difference in service agreement for programs of supports is that cancellation fees apply where cancellations are provided with less than 2 weeks notice.

Outreach

Outreach services are any service that Therapy Alliance Group runs in an area or location where we don’t have a full time base location. Typically, Therapy Alliance Group therapists will deliver primarily face to face services whilst on Outreach and make plans for your ongoing services between our visits.

Here at Therapy Alliance Group we are committed to partnering with you, and that includes working with you between outreach services. This could include providing home practice programs with regular check-ins between outreach visits, providing regular teletherapy, or providing services through TeleTAG Flex. We also actively plan for our next face to face follow up or review, and make sure that you always have a plan to access support.

Please contact us either via our website, email, or phone. If we don’t have Outreach planned to your area currently, we will track your interest. BUT YOU DON’T JUST HAVE TO WAIT! We have lots of service options that you can access right now. Consider if telehealth or TeleTAG Flex might be right for you!

Typically we will partner with local allied health practices, NGOs, GPs, PHNs, Councils, and other groups to arrange outreach services. However, where we become aware that there is a strong community need for services, we also consider independently arranging outreach services.  If you would be interested in being involved with arranging outreach services to your area, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us!

Home Practice Program

A home practice program is a therapy program and resources written and developed for you to implement at home, without frequent support from your therapist. You will still schedule regular reviews with your therapist, which might be completed via email, video sharing, telehealth or face-to-face, but these reviews will usually be 8-16 weekly, rather than weekly or fortnightly as in direct therapy or TeleTAG Flex.

A home practice program is different to home practice activities or programs you might receive if you are accessing direct therapy but need to cancel an appointment one-off. Activities you might receive in this instance are intended to provide dedicated homework and progress over a 1-2 week period, with your therapist reviewing progress and deciding to progress or continue goals at your next appointment. By contrast, a Home Practice Program is written and intended to cover you for a 1+ month period with clear guidance given about when to move on to new goals or the next step towards your goal.

All of our disciplines at Therapy Alliance Group can offer support through home practice programs! Whether Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Physiotherapy, or multiple services - even Key Worker Model Services - we can offer Home Practice Program services.

Home Practice Programs might suit any client or family who:

  • Are ready and able to take on the role of the “main therapist”
  • Might be unable to come to the clinic regularly
  • Have the equipment they need to complete their program

Home Practice Programs might not be for you if you aren’t able or ready to take on the role of “primary therapist”, or if you don’t have the necessary equipment.

You will need a way to receive and access files and, at times, the ability to print resources. However, more broadly, the equipment you will need will depend greatly on your specific goals. Your therapist will be able to discuss with you the equipment you are likely going to need if considering Home Practice Programs.

Hydrotherapy / Aquatic Therapy

Broadly speaking, hydrotherapy is any therapy service provided in water - typically in a shallow indoor pool. While usually associated primarily with physiotherapy and physical therapies, occupational therapy and, at times, speech pathology goals can also be facilitated through the use of aquatic therapy.  It is not teaching a child to swim (although some crossover may exist); rather it is activities and therapeutic exercises done while in the water.

Hydrotherapy might be suitable for anyone without contraindications. Clients who might particularly benefit from aquatic therapy include:

Physio clients with:

  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Mobility and balance difficulties
  • Strength and postural control difficulties
  • Joint-related pain or restricted movement
  • Difficulty with weight-bearing

OT clients looking to:

  • Improve Emotional regulation
  • Increase Social interactions
  • Provide stimulation communication, vocalisations, and language
  • Improve functional independence
  • Reduce sensory aversions
  • Improve body awareness and sensory integration
  • Improve water confidence

Your safety is our highest priority. When delivering hydrotherapy, we ensure the following:

  • Therapists providing hydrotherapy have completed specific water rescue training
  • We complete an individualised risk assessment prior to starting with a discussion of precautions and contraindications and your particular needs

For safety, we require an additional adult to be present who is capable of getting into the pool in an emergency situation. This additional adult does not need to be in the pool for the whole session, but must be willing and able to enter the pool if needed. If the client doesn’t have an appropriate support person, discuss with your therapist. There may be alternatives (e.g. having an AHA attend your appointment), although some alternatives may incur additional costs.

  • The cost of your appointment can be paid the same way as any in other mobile service (i.e. you can use NDIS funding or other funding types)
  • Clinician travel costs are applied as per our fee schedule
  • You pay your own entry to the pool

Bring anything that you would normally take to the pool! This is likely to include:.

  • Togs/swimwear
  • Towel
  • Goggles or headbands if beneficial for the client. We will not typically require the client’s head to go underwater.
  • A change of clothes
  • Flotation devices aren’t typically needed, but if they are useful for client engagement, they can be brought.

Dry needling (Acupuncture) - not ready for publication

Dry needling is a therapeutic technique performed by acupuncturists, physical therapists, and other trained healthcare professionals to address musculoskeletal pain and movement disorders. It is typically incorporated into a broader pain management plan that may also involve exercise, stretching, massage, and other treatments. This procedure involves inserting fine, sterile needles into the skin to target and relieve pain and tension.

Physio clients with:

  • Musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction
  • Presence of muscle tension

The following conditions may require additional safety precautions or may indicate that dry needling cannot go ahead. If any of the below relate to you, discuss them with your therapist.

  • These conditions might mean that we can’t dry needle certain areas.
    Always advise your therapist.
    • Cosmetic or Augmentation Surgery (e.g. Breast, buttock, pectoral, calf)
    • Chronic oedema (swelling) or lymphoedema
    • Recent axillary &/or inguinal node dissection
    • Open skin wounds or injuries
    • Peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage)
    • Haematoma
    • Pregnancy in the second or third trimester
    • Eczema or psoriasis

  • Serious contraindications include:
    • Taking blood thinners. We will need to consult with your GP before providing any dry needling
    • Recent radiotherapy
    • Malignancy
    • Diabetes
    • Bleeding disorders
    • Lowered immune function
    • Metal allergies
    • Cytotoxicity or recent treatment with chemotherapy

  • Absolute contraindications (we will not be able to provide dry needling)
    • Bloodborne viruses (e.g. HIV, Hepatitis B or C)
    • Pregnancy 1st trimester

Your safety is our highest priority. When providing dry needling, we ensure the following:

  • Additional training and certification for any therapist providing dry needling
  • We use only single-use needles
  • We ensure safe sharps disposal
  • All of our clinicians have up-to-date first aid and CPR certification
  • We seek your specific, additional informed consent, which includes an individual risk assessment discussed with you

You don’t need to bring any additional equipment, but you do need to wear clothes that you can easily remove (wear a top and bottoms rather than dresses or jumpsuits). We will provide you with a gown to wear during your appointment.

Contact us today for more information about any of our school-based services!

Screening

We are able to efficiently screen entire cohorts and/or individual students across developmental domains (e.g. speech, language, pre-literacy, literacy, gross motor, fine motor) and provide written summaries to the school and parents. We provide recommendations for those children with difficulties identified or at risk of falling behind their peers and are able to provide repeat screenings if these are indicated.

Group services

Group services within schools can be provided as their own service or can be a next step to our screening services. We work closely with your school to determine the most effective group service/s to provide and how these can be provided in a way that works with the school day. These groups can focus on any one developmental domain (e.g. speech sounds), or can facilitate development across multiple domains (e.g. fine motor + literacy). We can also focus on domains such as emotional regulation or social skill development in small or larger groups.

Teachers are integral to the development of each child’s unique potential and the creative futures of individuals and communities. Therapy Alliance Group is eager to support teachers and school communities in their work. Our experienced therapists are able to provide workshops or in-servicing for your teaching team focussed on the specific needs of your students and your school community.
